Michelangelo’s Fame

The city of Florence experienced different times. After the death of one of its rulers, Lorenzo the Magnificent, the French King Charles VIII invaded the state-city. Savonarola became Florentine political and religious leader. He prohibited the artefacts of contemporary art, Michelangelo had to move to Rome.

In Rome he produced his first life-size statue – Bacchus. When Michelangelo was 21 he was commissioned by Jean de Villiers, the Cardinal de la Groslaye. Young sculptor had to create the Virgin Mary. The work was called the Pieta – Mary was grieving over her dead son, Jesus. So when Michelangelo was only 23, he had been famous already.
